Woodrow Wilson was President of the United States; the Green Bay Packers did not yet exist; the United States was two years away from joining World War I; the cost of a stamp was two cents, and Reed Brothers Dodge was founded.

Through the years, the automotive industry has suffered major economic ups and downs, but Reed Brothers Dodge has weathered them all. The company is celebrating 93 years in business in October 2008. That makes Reed Brothers Dodge the oldest in the state of Maryland and one of the oldest in the entire nation.

When Lewis Reed opened his Dodge dealership in 1915, it was only one year after the first Dodge automobile was made. In 1914, Lewis Reed became a partner in Rockville Garage, a business he bought out in 1918. Lewis Reed and his brother Edgar, who later joined him in business in 1919, were the first to sell Dodge cars in Montgomery County. In fact, Reed Brothers Dodge is one of the oldest Dodge dealerships in the United States.

The dealership began as a family business and remains that way today. Lewis Reed's daughter, Mary Jane, married Lee Gartner, who joined the business in 1949. Lee Gartner continued the business after his father-in-law died in 1967. Three of Gartner's four children are now owner-operators in the business today to make it a third generation of family management. This means that you will find a Gartner family member working at Reed Brothers Dodge every business day. Rick Gartner is President, Barry Gartner is General Manager, and Jeanne Gartner recently joined the business after retiring from the United States Air Force in July 2006. Jeanne is Secretary and serves as Director of Digital Marketing and Website Administration.

Reed Brothers Dodge has occupied two locations, the present one at 15955 Frederick Road, Rockville and the original one that stood at the triangle where Hungerford Drive, Viers Mill Road and Route 28 intersect. In fact, "Dodge Street" in Rockville got its name because Reed Brothers Dodge was located there for so many years. The original site is now the Francis Scott Key Memorial Park. When the state widened the roads in 1970, the dealership moved to its present location.

"Letter to the General Manager"

"In the over thirty years that I have been buying vehicles, I have never been motivated to write a letter to any dealership until now. As you are aware, there have always been publicly viewed, stereotypical disparaging characteristics associated with the purchase of a new vehicle, such as sales pressure, nominal trade-in values, financing add-ons etc. Nevertheless, I would like to say that your staff has completely eliminated those paradigms.

For several weeks in late October, I had been researching dealerships from southern Virginia to northern Pennsylvania (on the Internet) looking for a new Dodge Ram truck with specific accessories. I finally located one in your inventory. My initial e-mail to your dealership received a courteous response with no sales pressure whatsoever. Upon my arrival, I was met by Mr. Dale Howard who took me directly to the truck I was looking for and allowed me all the time I needed for an inspection and test drive. Later, I spoke with Mr. Bill Welsh who finalized the financial part of the transaction. Both of these individuals were exceptionally courteous, knowledgeable, and most importantly - fair. They indeed conducted themselves as true professionals.

Even after I had purchased the vehicle, your dealership sent me a variety of customer service coupons, which is something I had never before received from any dealership, to include Mercedes! Normally, with most dealerships their motto seems to be based on the phrase, 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Dear Mr Salter,

"I would like to commend your staff in the service department for exceptional customer service. You have a great team! Tim especially.

On March 23rd, someone broke into my car to steal it. They messed up the ignition and other little things on my car. Unfortunately, I let my auto insurance lapse. I explained the situation to Tim and he was very sympathetic and caring. I told him that I really needed my car. I asked him was there anyway that I can eliminate some of the charges. Basically, I just needed to be able to drive it. Well, Tim made that possible. He was absolutely wonderful! He explained that people have hard times and to try to look on the bright side. Which is what I did. I was able to get my car back.

Tim is a great asset to your dealership. He really knows how to talk to customers when they are in need.
